Imagine stepping into the shoes of a police officer…
Visualize spending a few moments with your loved ones and kissing them goodbye before stepping out of your home into an increasingly hostile and perilous world. As a police officer, what will the next 10 or 12 hours of your shift hold for you? What kinds of challenges will you face? Perhaps you will be notified of an armed robbery in progress, or a serious motor vehicle crash. You may be directed to investigate a domestic assault--one of the most dangerous situations a police officer may face. Or sent to a location where an overdose has occurred.
You may find yourself dispatched to a home to meet with frantic parents whose child has gone missing. As a parent, the faces of your own children flash before your eyes. You hope they are safe and know how much you love them. Yet, upon reaching the address, you must set your feelings aside in order to fully engage in the situation at hand.
Of course, your shift wouldn’t be complete without the speeding driver, who, when you catch up with him, is less than thankful, because you are going to to make him late.
Yet you must remain courteous and professional at all times, because you will be held accountable for your conduct, words and actions at all times.
If you are serving as a Correctional Deputy, you, too, face a myriad of mentally taxing uncertainties. While serving in a confined space behind locked doors, your responsibilities include preserving the peace within the facility, keeping a watchful eye out for contraband, protecting inmates from assaults by other inmates, and ensuring the safety of your fellow officers.
Whether serving in public view or behind the scenes, our police and correctional officers are facing threats and challenges that were inconceivable a decade ago. Yet, each day they willingly continue to serve, knowing that at any moment, they may be required to run toward danger while others are running away. To put it simply, there is no public safety without the vital public service our community’s law enforcement officers provide.
Serving within law enforcement is mentally, emotionally and physically exhausting profession, which often results in significant behind the scenes stress within an officer’s life, and within his or her marriage, and family. We owe them better. The willingness of our police and correctional officers to serve under increasingly dangerous and stress-filled circumstances should elicit our utmost respect, our genuine thanks, our fervent prayer, and our heartfelt support.
We support and encourage our police and correctional officers by offering no fee, biblically based counseling for individuals and couples. We also offer support to those who have experienced a traumatic line of duty event. Additionally, we provide financial help to families when a member of law enforcement is injured, as well as during times of grief and bereavement.
We celebrate our police and correctional officers on special occasions, including providing gift cards on his or her birthday, as well as acknowledging other special events like anniversaries, new births, promotions and other work-related and community recognitions.
